Performance standard 4-channel wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) module of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) of 1.3 micron wavelength has been developed. The module provides a total data transmission capability of 40 Gbit/s with each channel operating 10 Gbit/s, which is very useful for high-speed active optical cables (AOCs) and for optical transmitters of 40GBASE-LR4 Ethernets under temperature controlled environments below 60 °C. The single-mode VCSELs are recognized as green light signal sources in information technology industries because they consume less electric powers compared to the existing edge-emitting laser diodes. Performance standard of the 4-channel WDM module is being prepared for an IEC standard documentation.
