Long-term Functioning in Subjects with Chronic Stroke Using WHODAS II

Objects: World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) is the newly developed tool to measure individual's ability based on the concept of International Classification of Functioning, disability, health classification (ICF). The purpose of this study is to identify relationship of functional status at discharge & long-term abilities after discharge and effects of personal factors on individual abilities in chronic stroke subjects. Methods: We investigated 146 subjects with brain lesions from years from 2010 to 2013. Of all 146 subjects, 56 were directly interviewed at outpatient clinic and 90 by call. Some of them (54 subjects) were dropped out. All subjects had been assessed for discharge MBI and MMSE. We used the Korean version of WHODAS II (WHODAS II), which was composed of 6 territories of 12 questions. The questions were answered on a 5-point scale (1:none, 5: extreme). It includes questions for personal factors such as gender, marriage, occupation, and education level. All subjects were divided six groups from discharge to interview (3, 6, 12, 24, 36, after 48 mo.). Statistical analysis was done for comparison and correlation between functional status at discharge & changes of long-term abilities and also for effects of personal factors on individual abilities. Results: All of 79 subjects (mean 61.6 years), subjects with cerebral infarction (mean 65.3 years) & hemorrhage (mean 55.8 years) were 48 and 31, respectively. The proportion of subjects married was 78.4% (62 subjects), the widowed 5.1% (4 subjects), single 6.3% (5 subjects), and the divorced 8.9% (7 subjects). Twenty three subjects had a job (29.1%), and 56 subjects not (70.9%). Subjects were divided by the year of education: 6 (none education, 7.6%), 29 (6 years, 36.7%), 11 (9 years, 13.9%), 26 (12 years, 32.9%), and 13 (16 years of education, 16.5%). Admission and discharge MBI of subjects with cerebral infarction or hemorrhage were 27.8/59.33 and 30.23/63.
