This paper examines the influence of parent child relationship on achievement motivation and academic achievement of Korean adolescents. To understand the achievement motivation and academic achievement, an indigenous analysis of Korean culture and psychological functioning of Korean adolescents is provided, with specific focus on the role of parent-child relationship. First, using the indigenous psychological analysis, empirical analysis of perception of parent-child relationship is examined. Second, the relationship between parent-child relationship and achievement motivation is reviewed and the mediational effect of self-efficacy. Third, the relationship between parent-child relationship and academic achievement is highlighted through a series of empirical studies. These results indicate the importance of the following five main points for future research: 1) in order to understand the achievement orientation of Korean adolescents, it is important to examine the role of parent-child relationship; 2) the impact of traditional values and Confucian philosophy influencing Korean family and parent-child relationship; 3) the dynamic influence of Korean culture on achievement motivation and academic achievement; 4) importance of relational and self-regulatory efficacy and emotional support on achievement; and 5) the further conceptualization and measurement of collective efficacy and its role on Korean family
