Influence of the Self-Esteem Level on the Insurance Planners' Job Performance in South Korea

This paper explores the relationship between self-esteem level and task performance of insurance planners in South Korea. Self-awareness or self-esteem is known as the way of viewing one’s ego quality. The results of task performance can be profoundly affected by her/his recognition of self-esteem. In this study, we try to measure the insurance planners’ job performance dependent upon their individual self-esteem level. Variables for job performance are categorized into three factors; knowledge, attitude, and skill. We try to analyze what the high self-esteem group and the comparatively low self-esteem group make difference in job performance. The respondents were classified into two groups according to their degree of self-esteem. The first group includes 136 and the second group includes 137 planners. The mean value of domestic self-esteem for the first group is 4.36, and 3.60 for the second. The mean value of social self-esteem is 4.14 and 3.31, the personality is 4.22 and 3.40, and the job is 3.99 and 3.06 respectively. The scores of the first group are higher than those of the second. The mean difference is also statistically significant. The result shows the mean value of the domestic self-esteem was the highest and that of the personality, and of the social, and of the job in orders for both groups. The statistically significant (p<.001) mean differences between two groups are clearly reflected in the task abilities. The mean values of the first group(high self-esteem) for attitude, skills, and knowledge are 3.90, 3.62, and 4.57, and those of the second group(low self-esteem) are 3.22, 2.97, and 4.34, respectively. We also found that the high self-esteem group manages more customers, more contracts, and spends higher cost for customer management than low self-esteem group does.
