Relationships between illness perception, self-efficacy, and self-care in pulmonary tuberculosis patients

Purpose : This descriptive study in order to examine the factors which influence on self-care and to identify the relationships between illness perception, self-efficacy, and self-care of the patients who were diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis. Methods : The study was conducted using a convenient sampling method from a university hospital in Incheon. One hundred forty four patients answered the questionnaires which included general characteristics, Brief Illness Preception Scale(Broadbent, Petrie, Main, Weinman, 2006), Self-efficacy Scale(Kang, 2000) and Self-care Scale(Choi, 1983). Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Moment Correlations and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean score of illness perception that the examined pulmonary tuberculosis patients was 48.94 out of 80 and the self-efficacy was 903.08 out of 1100. The mean score of self-care was 66.70 out of 90. There was a significant difference in marriage or not (t=2.613, p=.010), having religion or not (t=2.822, p=.005), and smoking or not (F=7.172, p=.001) to self care in patient with tuberculosis. There were statistically significant positive correlation between illness perception and self-care (r=.335, p=.000) and self-efficacy and self-care (r=.687, p=.000). However, there was no significant correlation between illness perception and self-efficacy (r=.089, p=.290). Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor was self-efficacy. Self-efficacy and illness perception were significant factors and accounted for 54.2% of the variance of self care in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Conclusion : As above the results, it was revealed that self-efficacy and illness perception are useful concept for increasing the self care in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Hence, it is needed to develop nursing intervention for increasing self-care of pulmonary tuberculosis patients by using these variables.
