Analytical Model for Multimedia Stream Synchronization

In the multimedia service, clients want to receive continuous multimedia service without packet loss. However, packet switched networks can be suffered from queuing delay and packet loss. These delays are variable and depend on the level of congestion in the network. To compensate the variable delays, buffers are usually employed. The size of buffer space can affect the underflow and overflow rates. In the underflow condition, clients are no more served on-time delivery service. On the other hand, some packets are lost in the overflow condition. Thus, for reducing the rates of underflow and overflow, it is required to understand relation between the size of buffer space and the probability of underflow and/or overflow. In this paper, we propose an analytical model using the discrete Markov chain of the leaky bucket model to prove quantitative relations.
