Effect of zirconia on laser cladding of hydroxyapatite bioceramic on Ti-ally

HAP coating on Ti-alloy substrate produced by laser cladding process was an acceptable consideration to improve the joint character between Ti-alloy biomaterial and natural bone. The current technique showed the problem of cracking when single HAP powder was used. Adding zirconia as a reinforcing agent to HAP was adopted as a possible solution. The microstructure and phase composition of thr formed coating were characterized with SEM, TEM and X-ray diffraction. As a result, a well uniform, crack-free coating of HAP/ZrO2 composites was formed on Ti-ally substrate by laser cladding.
