CFD -CSD Coupled Analysis for Flapping Wing by the Geometrically Exact Beam and Incompressible Navier-Stokes Solution

Towards the analysis upon flexible flapping wings, such as insects’ or birds’ wings, coupling between aerodynamics and structural dynamics will become a critical component. This paper presents a computational approach for simulating the flapping wing by coupling between CFD and CSD. Non-linear structural model based on the geometrically exact beam theory is used. This non-linear beam model will be coupled with preconditioned Navier-Stokes solutions. For the automatic grid generation in aerodynamic model, linear spring analogy is used. After that, coupling of the structural and aerodynamic model will be accomplished. Through this approach, computational aeroelastic framework will be implemented and the solution will be verified by comparing with the experimental results which were obtained for specific wing configurations.
