Polyhydroxyalkanoates Manufacturing Process for Carbon Neutral Circular Economy

초록

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are one of the most interesting biopolymers due to their mechanical properties and biodegradability with its wide application from daily to biomedical. This talk will introduce the proof-of-concept for recycle of byproduct (i.e. methane) from greywater treatment using anaerobic membrane bioreactor system and focus on the solvent-free extraction method to recover PHAs from biomass. Since the use of organic solvent can degrade the product and provide an environmental hazard, it is important to manufacture highly purified PHAs for biomedical application. This study objected to develop a spiked membrane , manufactured by vertically deposition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the membrane surface for efficient cell lysis. Vertically deposited CNTs play a role to pierce the cell membrane physically and possibly recover the PHAs. Results showed that >1 log of cells were inactivated for 3 h of filtration condition, which was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy image with live/dead staining. This study suggest how the carbon neutral circular economy can be adapted for efficient bioplastic manufacturing from bioprocessing.
