Many attempts have been made to combine alumina membranes with bioreactors for wastewater treatment. Alumina membranes offer great potential to increase the value of membrane bioreactors (MBRs) significantly due to their excellent thermal and chemical stability as well as separation ability over polymeric membranes. Recently, the roles of alumina membranes particularly in anaerobic MBRs have emerged as a result of improvement in permeate flux, thus achieving an energy-saving wastewater treatment process. Development of a low-cost alumina composite membrane also affords the opportunity to meet the reduction in total costs in both aerobic and anaerobic MBR systems with productions of good effluent qualities. This chapter reviews the designs and configurations of an MBR system using alumina membranes. The performances of alumina membranes for aerobic and anaerobic MBR applications for wastewater treatment are also addressed. © 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
