It is well known that the properties of the polymers are influenced by the crystallinity and the orientation of the polymer chains. In fact, one can take advantage of such an influence in order to manipulate mechanical, optical and electrical properties in a given polymer. Poly(ethylene 2.6-naphthalate)(PEN) which contains stiff naphthalene rings instead of benzene rings of PET is attracting material because of its outstanding physical and mechanical properties. There have been several studies on the influence of processing conditions on the structure and properties of PEN. These include solid-state extrusion, uniaxial film drawing and biaxial film drawing. However, there has been no study to determine orientation function of crystalline and avorphous state of drawn PEN film by infrared dichroism quantatitively. In this study, we examined the effects of uniaxial and biaxial drawing conditions on the molecular orientation and other molecular structure by using FTIR attenuated total internal reflection(ATR) technique and birefringence measurements.
