Route Choice Decision Factors in Air Cargo Transport Market: the Case between Northeast Asia and EU

The air cargo transport market between Northeast Asia and EU have been dominated by the direct flight routes. But, since the beginning of 2000’s, this situation has been changed gradually. The market share of the stop-over routes using the Dubai Airport as the transshipment point has been growing faster. This paper is aimed at finding out the factors of the decision making of shippers or forwarders. For this purpose, the data of time, fare, volume, and types of cargo as well as characteristic variables of airports by each route has been collected during the period of 200-2015. The analysis using the multinomial logit model shows the results as follows. First, the shippers put relatively more weight on fare than time in choosing the routes between direct flight and stop-over flight, which is different from the results of analysis on route choice among different modes of transport. Second, characteristic variables of airport like landing fee, transshipment time, show some slight but meaningful impact on route choice. Third, the market share of stop-over routes especially via Dubai Airport is getting grower proportional to the network increase in the airport.
