Gastroprotective effect of phytoncide extract on H pylori infection
초록
Aims and Bckground: For centuries, herbs have been used by traditional therapists around the world to treat various gastrointestinal tract disorders such as gastritis. The mechanism of action by which these botanicals employ their therapeutic properties has not been completely clarified. Anti-H. pylori properties of phytoncide extract might be one of the possible gastroprotective herb, to treat gastrointestinal tract disorders. Methods: In vitro cytotoxicity against Helicobacter pylori was investigated by agar diffusion assay; protective properties of phytoncide extract, was investigated by H&E staining, detection of cytotoxin gene (cag-A), and by pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β). Results: Aqueous extract of phytoncide significantly inhibited the adhesion of Helicobacter pylori to C57BL/6 mice. Reduction of gastric severity in H. pylori infected mice was associated with a reduction in expression level of proinflammatory cytokines of gastric mucosa such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and cag-A gene in phytoncide treated groups. Conclusion: Phytoncide can inhibit the growth of H. pylori and could form a promising basis for further investigation in the discovery of new natural anti-H. pylori compounds.
