The relationship among Self-Efficacy, social support, and life satisfaction: Comparison of students living in rural and urban areas

This study examined the role parents play in influencing children's psychological and behavioral functioning in urban and rural areas of Korea. Using a questionnaire developed and translated by Kim and Park (1997) a total of 999 primary school students living in an urban area and 475 students living in rural area completed the questionnaire. The following aspects were assessed: Attributional Style developed by Kim and Park (1997, scale measuring attribution to effort, ability, luck, fate, ingroup support, and outgroup influence), Self-Efficacy scale developed by Bandura (1997) and extended by KIm and park (1997), a modified Individual-Oriented and Social-Oriented Achievement Motivation scale developed by Yu and Yang (1994), Social Support Questionnaire developed by Park and Kim (1997), Perception of Korean Society (Kim & Park, 1997), Perception of school Environment (Park & Kim, 1997), a modified version of Life-Satisfaction scale developed by Taft (1986), Cawte's (1972) stress scale, and various demographic and behavioral measures (including academic grade). The results indicate that the parents are the most influential persons affecting various aspects of psychological and behavioral functioning, such as self-efficacy, attributional style, achievement motivation, stress, life-satisfaction, and academic grade. Also, teachers play an important role, similar to parents. Detailed analysisof the results will be provided
