Enhancement of Water-Repellent Property of Pearlescent Pigments via Silylation Method

초록

Various silanes are introduced onto pearlescent pigments to enhance the water- repellency. These pigments, produced by coating plate-type substrates with metal oxides like titania and silica, are widely used in cosmetics, automotive paints, and construction materials. However, the intrinsic hydrophilicity of metal oxides results in low water repellence. To resolve this, different silanes are capped onto the pigments via hydrolysis and condensation reactions. Contact angle measurements reveal that octadecyltrimethoxysilane-capped pigments exhibit the highest hydrophobicity due to their long hydrocarbon tails. A sedimentation test is conducted by dropping silane-capped pigments onto water and confirming the enhancement of water- repellent properties. These results suggest the effectiveness of simple silylation for enhancing the water-repellent property of pearlescent pigments, widening the potential applications to various industrial fields. 본 연구는 2025년 정부(방위사업청)의 재원으로 국방과학연구소의 지원을 받아 수행된 미래도전국방기술 연구개발사업임(No.915066201).
