Density variation within a powdered metal compact is a well-known phenomenon, but not understood fully in quantitative manner. Non-uniform density distribution within compacted parts, arising from non-uniform distribution of compacting pressure, leads to distortion of P/M parts after sintering. For the parts with large L/D (height to diameter) ratio, the friction in the die-wall interface plays an increasingly important role and the problem becomes even more severe.
