Safety Evaluation of Superstructure of Railway Non-ballasted Plate Girder Bridge in Application of CWR

If an existing non-ballasted track of a railway bridge is changed to a continuous welded rail (CWR), safety evaluation of the superstructure of the bridge must be performed, but methodology for engineers has not been properly provided yet. Therefore, this study presents a method of evaluating the safety of the superstructure of an existing railway bridge with CWR. This method requires first setting up an updated analytical model using acceleration data measured from the railway bridge. In the study, a Genetic Algorithm has been applied to update the analytical model. For safely evaluation, stresses calculated by static structural analysis using the updated analytical model are compared to the allowable stresses defined in the design code. The effect of CWR was analyzed through step-by-step analysis, not by aggregating individual analysis results obtained under each load condition. The proposed safety evaluation method was verified using experimental data obtained from an actual non-ballasted railway plate girder bridge at the site. © 2020 The Korean Society for Railway.
