Real-time water quality monitoring system based on DGPS and mobile IT solution has been applied in the coastal waters of Incheon, Korea. Monitoring system is composed of (1) multi-parameter sensor unit (salinity, temperature, depth, pH, DO, turbidity and chlorophyll), nutrients auto-analyzer (nitrate and phosphate), sonar and DGPS (position accuracy: 1m) obtained at every second, (2) data integration unit, and (3) server and client unit for remote data collection and control through mobile CDMA 2000-1X wireless network (download speed at 144 kbps). This system incorporates mobile TCP/IP server and client technology and winsock application covering multiple research vessels and mooring stations simultaneously. With specially designed flow-through type chamber to reduce air bubble formation, continuous real-time monitoring surface seawater quality of wide area could be done even at cruising speed of 13 knots. Due to high speed and on-line real-time data accessibility, water quality modeling and decision-making against coastal water pollution will be more accurate and effective than ever, reducing time-consuming marine monitoring efforts and costs.
