Bubble column photobioreactors for mass cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis

Under optimized condition and operating methods, the highest productivity in 400 mL scale photobioreactor was obtained as the final cell density of 3.6 ´ 105 cell/mL (6.2 g/L) and astaxanthin concentration of 208 mg/L (3.3 g/g %). During scale-up process to 10 L scale, cell productivity and astaxanthin accumulation were reduced to 2.8 ´ 105 cell/mL (4.1 g/L) and 57 mg/L (1.3 g/g %), respectively. The experimental results indicate that bubble-column type photobioreactor can be a good choice for high-density cultivation of H. pluvialis. In order to commercialize the proposed bioprocess, more study is required on up-scaling strategy and effective inducing method.
