Smart Material Actuators for Information Storage Devices

This paper presents three types of novel actuating systems for information storage devices; ER mount for the CD-ROM, piezoactuator for the optical pick-up and SMA actuator for the slider lift of HDD. The operating principles of each device are described with some simulated and measured control results showing the practical feasibility.
