Design of Polarizing Beam Splitter using maximum bandwidth photonic band gap

초록

A novel polarizing beam splitter is proposed using photonic crystal structure of maximized band gap. It is the general rule of thumb of photonic band gap that the gaps can be generated easily in a connected high-index structure for TE mode, and in an isolated high-index structure for TM mode. So, the maximized band gap structure can be designed by hybridizing both connectivity and granule size, as reported by Sung et al. recently. The defects in line formed by filling air holes constitute a leading photonic crystal (PC) waveguide, which supports both TE and TM modes. As this PC waveguide has much larger modal birefringence than normal waveguide structure, it is possible to design a novel ultra-compact polarizing beam splitter.
