Current situation of clinical alarm, interfering factors of alarm mangement, and nurses fatigue and perceptions on alarm in intensive unit

The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate interfering factors of alarm management and current situation of clinical alarms in intensive care unit, and to identify the degree of nurses's fatigue and perception on clinical alarm. Subjects were 77 ICU nurses and 48 critically ill patients. Overall 2,184 clinical alarm were counted for 48 hours observation. On the average, 45.5 clinical alarm occurred for one hour per subject. Of these, 1,394 alarm was categorized into false alarm. The alarm fatigue score was 24.3 out of total 35 point. Highest score items was " I always get bothered due to clinical alarm". Highest score itm in factors hidering proper management of alarm was "frequent false alarm, which lead to reduced attention or response to alarm when they occur. Only in nine cases out of 48 subjects, nurses set specific alarm range based on current patient condition.
