Diffusion-Weighted MR Imaging in MELAS Syndrome

The precise pathologic n\mechanism of the stroke-like episodes of the MELAS syndrome is still controversial. A total of 13 MR examinations were performed with a 1.5 T whole body MR unit in four patients Variable changes of ADC were noted in the acute infarct-like lesions of the MELAS syndrome. Our results indicate that both cytotoxic and vasogenic d\edema can present during acute stage of MELAS syndrome, and they can result in severe sequelae of tissue damage.
