Characteristics of transgenic plant suspension culture expressing recombinant proteins were investigated by using Nicotiana tabacum suspension culture producing Escherichia coli b-glucuronidase (GUS) as a model system. The extraction condition for GUS analysis was optimized and it was found that sonication treatment was necessary and cell-to-buffer ratio of 1:2 was an optimum value. Total GUS activity reached the maximum at the initial stationary phase and delined thereafter. This implies that the recombinant GUS production is growth-associated.
