A Study on MWD Data Mapping for XR-Based Ship Maintenance Training Content
초록
With the recent introduction of autonomous ships, the decline in crew numbers, and the aging workforce, efficient execution of ship maintenance tasks has become increasingly important. In particular, it is essential to deliver and convey accurate maintenance procedures even to less experienced workers. Conventional remote support methods, primarily relying on voice and video communication, present limitations for inexperienced personnel in executing tasks accurately. To overcome these challenges, an augmented reality (AR)-based intelligent remote maintenance system for ships has been developed. This system enables shore-based experts to remotely support onboard personnel during equipment failures and provides essential engineering data in an intuitive format. This study aims to expand such remote maintenance systems into training content by establishing a data mapping framework that allows effective use of Maintenance Work Database (MWD)?which includes 3D equipment models, animations, and maintenance manuals?within a cross reality (XR) environment. For this purpose, existing MWD data was transformed into formats compatible with XR-based training, and a data mapping method was proposed with consideration for the linkage between maintenance procedures and XR content. Furthermore, the established data mapping framework was implemented in an XR environment to evaluate whether data could be effectively mapped in accordance with maintenance procedures, thus verifying its applicability to XR-based training content development. The developed prototype demonstrated that MWD data can be seamlessly transformed and mapped into XR content, indicating the potential of this research to contribute effectively to the development of XR-based ship maintenance education and training systems.
