The report uses overall energy intensity, electricity intensity and energy intensity (excluding electricity) as physical indicators. As these indicators do not distinguish processes/ products like oxygen steel and electric steel, those economies with larger shares of electric steel in the crude steel production tend to show higher energy efficiency or lower energy intensities than others. This applies also to those years with larger shares of electric steel in the crude steel production. This is because the production of electric steel requires only about one third of that of oxygen steel. The decomposition analysis using physical energy efficiency allows to assess the energy efficiency improvements in the manufacturing industry thus allows to make projections on energy demand.
