Impact of dementia preventive education and physical and cognitive enhancement program on dementia preventive activities in community elders

Purpose: This study, dementia preventive program has been provided to local elderly and their use of this program and their satisfaction to the program has been moniotred prospectively. Methods: This study was conducted using a convinence sampling method from on church in Incheon. Dementia preventive program has been provided to 13 elderly for 12 weeks, which constitute: 2 sessions of deementia preventive education, 12 sessions of gymnastics, 7 sessions of art classes, and 3 sessions of language classes. Questionnaire regarding dementia preventive activities were given before the program, 7 weeks from the start of the program, as well as 12 weeks after the start of the program. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon test and Friedman test. Results: Provided dementia preventive program has statistically increased dementia preventive activities on community elders. Dementia preventive activities levels were higher in time of 2nd questionnaire than 1st questionnaire. Dementia preventive activities levels were higher in time of 3rd questionnaire than 2nd questionnaire. The level of satisfaction on dementia preventive program was 4.46 out of maximum score of 5. Conclusion: This study indicated that dementia preventive education can increase dementia preventive activities in community elders. Hence, it is recommended to use this program to minimize dementia incidence in community elders.
