Post-synthetic modification is gaining prominence as a highly effective strategy for enhancing the functionality of porous materials without significant structural changes. Recently, there is growing interest in research focusing on elevating proton conductivity through the post-synthetically incorporation of ionic liquids (ILs) into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This approach is pivotal as it not only addresses the viscosity challenges associated with ILs but also simultaneously resolves the issue of low proton conductivity observed in MOFs under anhydrous conditions. This review aims to provide initial insights into the field of IL-functionalized MOFs designed for enhanced proton conductivity and their composite of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for practical usability. Post-synthetic modification with ionic liquids is gaining prominence as a highly effective strategy for enhancing proton conductivity in metal-organic frameworks without significant structural changes.
