Cytologic features of prostatic adenocarcinoma detected in urine cytology

Presence of prostatic adenocarcinoma cells in urine cytology specimen is rare. These cells may be easil overlooked or misdiagnosed when clinically unsuspected, and cytologic features that help separate prostatic adenocarcinoma and urothelial carcinoma have not been well characterized. We reviewed 19 urine cytology specimens obtained from 13 prostatic adenocarcinoma patients confirmed by histology and evaluated characteristic features discriminating them from high grade urothelial carcinoma.
