Lactobacilli have been considered to play an important role in the health of human vagina. They secrete inhibitory substances to prevent vaginal infection by pathogenic organisms. In a previous study, we isolated lactobacilli from korean women and one of them (KLB46) was identified as Lactobacillus crispatus by 16S rRNA sequencing. In this study, 16 female subjects suffering from recurrent bacterial vaginosis(BV) and atrophic vaginosis(AV) were treated twice over a week period with intravaginal implantation of viable L. crispatus KLB46. Implantation of L. crispatus KLB46 appeared to establish rapid clinical response in 80% of the BV patients and 30% of the AV patients, which was characterized by disappearance of mal odor and an improvement in vaginal discharge. BV patients have no longer satisfied the composite clinical criteria for the diagnosis of BV. Also, microscopic observation of vaginal sample supported the confidence of implantation result.
