In order to investigate the effects of fermented milk supplement containing pumpkin on serum lipid profiles in postmenopausal osteoporosis model rats. Twenty three female Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200g were ovariectomized and then were randomly assigned to three groups (low calcium diet; LCD, standard diet of basic AIN-76; control, standard diet + fermented milk supplement containing pumpkin; case group) and each were fed a low calcium diet for three weeks. After three weeks, LCD group was sacrificed and the rest group was fed an experimental diet for 4 weeks. Triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol level in serum were significantly lower in the case group compared to the LCD and control group. Total cholesterol level and the ratio of LDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol in serum were significantly lower in case group compared to the LCD group. Serum HDL-cholesterol level and the ratio of HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol were significantly higher in case group compared to the rest groups. Serum total cholesterol level was positively correlated with LDL-cholesterol level but negatively correlated with the ratio HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol. Serum HDL-cholesterol level was positively correlated with the ratio HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol but negatively correlated with the ratios LDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol. Serum LDL-cholesterol level was negatively correlated with the ratio HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol but positively correlated with the ratio LDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol. These findings suggest a possible anti-hyperlipidemic effect of fermented milk supplement containing pumpkin in postmenopausal osteoporosis model rats.
