A Study on the possibility of architectural representation in the works of Piranesi

This study is an attempt on investigating the notion of ‘otherness’ that is inherent in the works of Piranesi, on the basis of scientific knowledge, who had sought for the coexistence of classicism and modernism by the reinterpretation of the archeological element from the modern viewpoint. Focusing on 'Prison' that defines the autonomous interior space that takes the 'city' as outside otherness in the architectural space through two dimensional plan drawings while at the same time, that takes contradictory methods by which the internalized city is linked to the outside, the thesis argues the 'otherness' implied in Piranesi's painting to seek for the applicability of such 'otherness' in architectural representation in the transition period between modernism and postmodernism when the architectural trend and thoughts were too ambiguous to be defined.
