초록
This paper studies two free choice items (FCIs) in Korean, focusing on their quantificational properties. For the first one, it is proposed that amwuna is an indefinite based FCI, which exhibits universal- existential quantificational variation, and that its universal quantificational force is derived in terms of conversational implicature. In contrast, it is argued that nwukwuna is an FCI which inherently conveys a universal quantificational force. To support these points, this paper investigates why the two FCIs show different distributions under imperatives. Especially, given the assumption that imperatives require a necessity modal operator (contra minimal/modal force-variability approaches), it is discussed (i) how a permission reading can arise in imperatives, and (ii) how it interacts with the licensing of the two FCIs in Korean.
