In this study, the performance of an automobile air conditioner using HFC134a and PAG has been experimentally evaluated with variations of refrigerant / oil charges and their effects on the system performance have been investigated. Then standards on the refrigerant charge have been suggested. Measurements were taken in a breadboard type refrigeration test unit. Both the COP and capacity decreased rapidly as the refrigerant oil charge increases because of an increase of the evaporating temperature and an operation as a fouling factor of the refrigerant oil remaining in the heat exchanger. As the refrigerant charge increases, both the COP and capacity increase, but the COP decreases and the capacity is maintained similarly after the proper charge of refrigerant. It is considered that the performance is influenced by the subcooling considering the capacity and pressure drop in the evaporator. The COP and the subcooling are found to be the indicator of the refrigerant charge.
