Partisanship as a Social Identity : A Comparative Analysis of Western and Postcommunist Partisans

To what extent have the social cleavages put forth by Lipset and Rokkan taken root in Western and postcommunist partisanship over the past two decades? After more than two decades after postcommunist democratization, we now have ample data which make this question answerable. Using the CSES data from 1996 to 2011, I compare the cleavagepartisanship linkages of the two groups of democracies. My multilevel models reveal that Western partisanship has relied more on social cleavages than postcommunist partisanship. I further find that differences in party supply stability and unemployment rates between the regions contribute to such regional variation.
