Development of AAC vocabulary and graphic symbols for Korean people with severe and nonverbal disabilities: Focusing on human rights, damage, and community communication

Purpose: It is important to develop useful vocabulary for people with severe and nonverbal disabilities to participate in the context of adulthood activities such as adult hobbies, leisure, community participation and use of public facilities. The purpose of this study was to develop AAC vocabulary and graphic symbols for people with severe and nonverbal disabilities. Method: We investigated the needs of parents and experts, developed a vocabulary, evaluated the validity of the developed vocabulary, and developed graphic symbols based on the validity of the vocabulary. In addition, the developed graphic symbols were evaluated to determine symbol validity. Results: A total of 206 symbols were developed for people with severe and nonverbal disabilities by modifying the symbols work to enhance iconicity. They showed high validity among people with severe and nonverbal disabilities, their parents, AAC experts, people with severe and nonverbal disabilities, and special teachers. Conclusion: The graphic symbols for people with severe and nonverbal disabilities have been developed in a coherent concept. Follow-up studies of relevant vocabulary and major discussions on iconography and expansion are needed. © 2020 Seorim. All rights reserved.
