The Korean ice core drilling activities in Mongolian Altai Mountains
초록
The first ice core drilling activity organized by Korea was ice coring at Tsambagarav glacier, Mongolian Altai Mountains in 2008, performed by cooperation with Korea-Mongolia-China. The Chinese made ice corer used at the drilling and recovered 40 m length of ice core at 3,830 m a.s.l. The Korean made ice corer used from the second drilling at Mt. Monh Hayrhan, Mongolian Altai Mountains in 2010, and recovered 70 m length of ice core up to bottom at 3,804 , a.s.l. In 2011, the glacial expedition and Automatic Weather System (AWS) set up was performed as the preliminary study of the third ice core drilling at Taban Bogd, the largest glaciers in the Altai Mountains and located board area of Monmgolia, Chkna and Russia. The purpose of ice core drilling at Altai Mountains are not only reconstruction of paleo-climate and paleo-environment for understanding the role of Asia within the global environment but also to ge experience and technology in drilling shallow ice cores in estreme conditions in high altitudes.
