Environment-friendly bio-based epoxy resin/cellulose nanofiber film for triboelectric nanogenerator application

Because of their highly hydrophilic characteristics, the usability of cellulose-based materials is limited in various practical applications. Herein, we propose an easy and simple approach to enhance hydrophobicity on cellulose nanofiber-based materials. In this regard, bio-based epoxy is coated on the cellulose nanofiber film. The interaction of the functional group of cellulose nanofibers and vanillin-derived epoxy endows the hydrophobicity. Coated cellulose nanofiber film shows better hydrophobicity compared to neat cellulose nanofiber film. More importantly, bio-based epoxy resin-coated CNF film demonstrated excellent triboelectric performance. Thus, the present research explores environment-friendly and hydrophobic materials for triboelectric nanogenerator performance applications. © 2023 SPIE.
