A Numerical Study on the Flow Around a Rudder Considering Low Speed Full Ship and Propeller's Wake

A lot of problems occur in building large vessels, one of which is that a low speed full ship such as VLCC(Very large crude oil carrier) has difficulty with sufficient control ability because the original rudder may not generate enough lifting force. This problem has caused many marine accidents. Therefore, the necessity of design of high-lift rudders has increased. As a series of solutions of this problems, the ability to analyze flow around a rudder is needed to design the high-lift rudder, and the rudder should be designed in accordance with the analysis results. One of related earlier studies conducted numerical simulation. It is known that it is difficult to utilize flow data of around a rudder when designed through earlier studies. The present paper is going to investigate variation of flow characteristics around a rudder by interaction with hull-rudder through numerical simulation using real ship data and examine that numerical simulations can be used effectively in the design of the high-lift rudder. Also, the gab flow model is adopted to solve the characteristics of the horn rudder.
