Spatial Structure and Regional Disparities in the Physical Activity Domain of the Korean Sports Happiness Index

초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the spatial distribution and clustering patterns of physical activity indicators within the physical activity domain of the Korean Sports Happiness Index developed by Kim, Moon, and Kang (2025). Data were obtained from the 2025 Community Health Survey and the National Sport Participation Survey. The analysis focused on walking practice rates, perceived effects of regular physical activity, and perceived physical fitness. Choropleth mapping, Moran’s I, and Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) analyses were employed. The results revealed positive spatial autocorrelation across all indicators. Walking practice rates exhibited the strongest spatial clustering pattern, with High–High clusters concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area and Low–Low clusters primarily located in inland regions of Gangwon, Chungcheong, and Gyeongsang provinces. In contrast, perceived effects of physical activity and perceived physical fitness showed relatively weak spatial autocorrelation, with distinct local clustering patterns identified across indicators. These findings suggest that physical activity should be understood not merely as an individual health behavior but as a spatial phenomenon shaped by local living environments, sport infrastructure, and health culture. Furthermore, the Korean Sports Happiness Index can serve as a spatial analytical framework for identifying regional disparities in physical activity and informing place-based sport policies.
