The effect of dietary zinc deficiency and vitamin E supplementation on lipid peroxidation was studied using 40 Sprague-Dawley male rats(48 weeks). zinc deficient diet(Zn, 0ppm), zinc normal diet(Zn, 36.5ppm), and vitamin E supplemented diet(1000IU tocopherol/kg of diet) were used as experimental diet. During the first three weeks, rats were divided into zinc normal(ZnN, 8 rats) and zinc deficient(ZnD, 32 rats) groups. Eight rats from each group were sacrified to get blood and tissues. The remaining 24 zinc deficient rats were then divided into zinc normal(ZnDN), zinc deficient(ZnDD), vitamin E supplemented(ZnDE)groups. After another three weeks of experiment, all animals were sacrificed to get blood and tissues. TBARS levels in plasma and liver, conjugated diene levels in liver were measured as lipid peroxidation index. The concentration of vitamin E and zinc in blood and liver, were also measured. weights of liver, kidney and spleen per 100g body weight were not significantly different but those of thesis were decreased in ZnDD. There were no significant differences in Zn levels in serum and the liver. Plasma and liver TBARS level and liver conjugated diene levels weresignificantly higher in ZnDD than in ZnDN and ZnDE. Therefore, it seems that lipid peroxidation is accelerated by dietary zinc deficiency and recovered partly by vitamin E supplementation.
