Diabetes causes erectile dysfunction by both angiopathy and neuropathy in the corpus cavernosum. It is also known that diabetic angiopathy is resulted from endothelial damage by the free radicals produced from the endothelium of peripheral artery. Recently, red ginseng was found to have antioxidative effect in various organs. We, herein, investigated the effect of red ginseng on erectile function of diabetic rat in order to predict whether it has a role to prevent a diabetic patient from erectile dysfunction The erectile function was significantly decreased in long term diabetics(avg. 21.6 weeks) with standard food than the normal controls and shot term diabetics(avg. 38.2 weeks) with standard food. Glutathione content was decreased and malonyldialdehyde activity was increased in diabetics with standard food than the controls. In diabetics with red ginseng, erectile function was better than that of age-matched diabetics with standard food and even similar to normal controls. Glutathione contents in the diabetics with red ginseng were higher than the diabetics with standard food and lower than the controls.
