A spherical Ba2TiSi2O8 (BTS) and Sm3+ doped BTS glasses were prepared by aerodynamic levitation. The glass prepared by aerodynamic levitation represented enhanced glass stability. The crystallization rate of levitated sample was slower than that of the conventional melt-quenched glass. With increasing the heat treatment temperature, the lattice parameter, a of nanocrystalline BTS crystal formed in glass decreased, but the lattice parameter, c of that increased. This result was ascribed to the residual stresses occurred during cooling due to the thermal expansion mismatches between the glass and BTS crystal. Nanocrystallized Sm3+ doped BTS glass exhibited yellow-green (564 nm), orange (601 nm) and red (647, 709 nm) luminescence. With increasing heat-treatment temperature, intensities of all emission intensities increased due to increased crystallization of BTS crystals. Nanocrystallized BTS glass ceramic prepared by aerodynamic levitation is expected to utilize for optical devices, such as visible semiconductor laser, optical switch and amplifier.
