Application of air cavity ship for reduction of viscous resistance has been considered as an emerging and attractive method due to its advantages over other drag reduction techniques. Recently it has been reported that application of air cavity to a planing hull in model scale result in speed increase of 7-12 knots. Vented cavities applied to a low-seed barge reduced about 15% of the total drag and 30% for high-speed patrol boats. In the present study, a G/T 40ton class catamaran has been selected and model tests are preformed to investigate the influence of hull bottom shapes on effectiveness of the air lubrication technique. The model ship is made of F.R.P in 1:12.5 scale. Extensive resistance tests with various step heights have been tested to investigate their influence in the formation of air cavity and drag reduction. In the process, the characteristics of air cavity attached on the bottom and the flow field around the cavity are observed from the window of transparent acrylic plate on the bottom.
