초록
To improve the K1c of SiC whisker reinforced Si3N4 ceramics by controlling the interfacial chemistry, we firstly investigated alumina of carbon coating conditions on the surface of SiC whiskers as well as investigate the synthesize conditions of whiskers from kaolin. Secondly, the mechanical properties of composite with coated whiskers were investigated in relation to the microstructure. By the addition of 20vol% carbon coated SiC whiskers, the K1c of composite was increased up to 7.7MPam1/2 which was 10% and 35% higher than as-received SiC whiskers reinforced composite and Si3N4 monolith, respectively. It was found that the crack deflection and whisker pull-out effect were increased by the addition of carbon coated SiC whiskers. Thus, carbon coated layers on the surface of SiC whiskers were considered to form weak interface. contributing to the K1c improvement
