purpose: The aim of this paper is to eluci-date the etymology of the eyelid muscles. Methods: In PubMed search, the following keywords were searched: ethymology and eyelid (54), terminology and eyelid (67), terminology and levator (13), terminology and oris (7), history and eyelid muscle (162), history and levator palpebrae (50), and history and orbicularis oculi (45). From the Google search, books were read giving a general understanding of the topic.
