This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of lotus leaf and root hot water extract supplementation in 8-week body weight control program for Korean overweight/obese female college students. The program consisted of diet therapy, exercise, and behavior modification was conducted for 8 weeks. The body composition and serum lipid profiles were assessed before and after the program. Subjects were randomly divided into three groups (control group, n=9; leaf group, n=9; root group, n=9). Average age of the control, leaf, and root groups were 20.3, 21.1, and 20.6 years old, respectively. After 8 weeks, average weight was significantly decreased in the control (p<0.05), leaf (p<0.05), and root (p<0.001) groups. The body fat mass was significantly decreased in the control (p<0.01), leaf (p<0.001), and root (p<0.001) groups. The percent body fat were significantly decreased significantly decreased in the control (p<0.001), leaf (p<0.001), and root (p<0.001) groups. The soft lean mass was significantly increased in the leaf (p<0.01) and root (p<0.05) groups but not the control group. The change of percent body fat in the root group was significantly higher compared to other groups (p<0.05). After the program, serum triglyceride level was significantly decreased in the control (p<0.01), leaf (p<0.01), and root (p<0.05) groups. The serum total cholesterol level was significantly decreased in the leaf (p<0.01) and root (p<0.01) groups but not the control group. The serum LDL-cholesterol level in the root group was significantly decreased compared to other groups (p<0.05). These results suggest that lotus hot water extract supplementation may decrease percent body fat and serum total cholesterol level (leaf and root hot water extract) and serum LDL-cholesterol level (root hot water extract) in 8-week body weight control program for overweight/obese female college students.
