Xanthogranulomatous lesion in vermiform appendix, a rare histological variant of appendicitis
초록
Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical diseases requiring emergency operation, but xanthogranulomatous appendicitis, a histologically special variant of appendicitis, is quite rare. It is an uncommon type of chronic inflammatory process that leads to fulminant tissue destruction and is most commonly described in the kidney and gallbladder. Due to the nature of such aggressive tissue destruction, xanthogranulomatous lesion of various body organs can easily mimic clinically and radiologically malignant tumors as well as other inflammatory processes which may cause patient to undergo radical surgery. Herein, I report a case of xanthogranulomatous lesion of the appendix presenting as acute appendicitis necessitating appendectomy.
