This paper presents a new design concept for the seismic isolation of bridges based on the analysis of Life-Cycle Cost (LCC). Since comprehensive optimization requires a lifetime perspective from design, construction, maintenance, and to decommissioning [1], optimal reliability level of isolated bridges is determined as the one that involves the highest net life-cycle benefit to the society, or the minimum LCC.
