A Rapid Assessment Survey of Macrobenthic Invasive Species in Korean Waters

The rapid assessment survey for marine bioinvasions was conducted to detect introduced species and collect spatial baseline data in Korean waters from May 2010 to March 2013. A total of 97 stations from 42 ports were surveyed, mainly consisting of dock-fouling stations and adjacent buoys and other floating materials. Material was sampled by a variety of techniques and examined in the field and laboratory. We report here the 15 major invasive species together with the distribution status in Korean waters. Those species are one Sponge, two Bryozoans, three Mollusks, one Polychaete, four Cirripedes, and four Ascidians as follows; 1. Halichondria bowerbanki Burton, 1930 보어밴키해면 2. Ascidiella aspersa (Muller, 1776) Two of these invasive species, a serpulid polychaete Ficopomatus enigmaticus (Fauvel, 1923) and a mytilid bivalve Xenostrobus securis (Lamarck, 1819), are newly recorded in Korean waters by this rapid assessment survey.
